Linear Expressions
A workshop with Soosie Jobson
These lightweight wraps are perfect for a summer evening wrap or an autumn scarf. This technique works best on light weight open weave silks so that the pencil rovings – or as I like to call them Rovettes – have a chance to stick to the fabric.
In each of these wraps the singular nature of line is turned into rhythm by constant repetition. There are only lines in these designs – there’s no shading or shapes or change. But by repeating them we create an impression of rhythm. The movement comes from the positioning of the lines. Combined they insinuate, suggest and represent.
In this workshop we will cover:
- the technique for making rovettes from any wool roving (as opposed to buying them),
- the pressure points in laying, prefelting and fulling the wraps,
- and the design technique of drawing with your Rovettes.
Participant Experience Level: Beginners and up
Duration of Workshop: 1 day
Estimated materials cost if you had to buy everything: $40
