Flat Pack to 3D – Beyond the flat resist
Workshop with Soosie Jobson
Over the years felters have tried to create 3D forms in felt using all kinds 3D objects as a resist, usually echoing the shape of the solid object. Things like balloons, foam shapes, buckets, to name a few but there are 3 problems using these type of objects. Firstly, it is difficult to lay wool with consistency let alone accuracy. Prefelting is the next problem – how do you roll on say a foam shape? And finally, how do you full it properly and achieve the shrinkage required? It can’t shrink over a solid object.
Luckily a long time ago felters discover the flat circular resist to create bowls and vessels. But what if wanted a 2 tier vessel? Or 3 tiers. Or square? Maybe even hexagonal? This is where 3D resists come into it. But don’t 3D resists have the same solid object problems? Not if they are flat packed!
Join Soosie and learn how to unlock the power of 3D resists. This 2 day workshop is suitable for all levels of felters as the projects are designed in the three levels. All you need to know is how to make wet felt, and have at least made something from a flat resist.
Soosie Jobson is a feltmaker and textile artist whose work reflects her obsession with Western Australia gained from living throughout the state, including remote, rural and regional areas. She works in both 2D and 3D form with her latest series of works representing the diverse environments of Western Australia. Creating them with manipulated felt which is embellished with beading and stitching to create a rich textural look.
Experience level: Must know how to make wet felt and have at least made something from a flat resist.
