Hats with Hattitude with Sue Eslick

In this two-day workshop we will create a unique fantasy hat or tea cosy with complex design elements.

Individual pattern templates will be drawn using each participant’s head/ tea pot measurements, and shrinkage factors will be discussed to create a resist.  We will felt around the resist to make a hollow form as the basis for our hat or cosy.  The application of additional design elements such as nuno, cords, spikes, fins and holes will be explored.

Techniques will be learned to full, shrink, stretch, steam and block the felt and add folds or pleats to form a hat or cosy with a strong design that fits the head or tea pot.   Basic templates will be provided that may be adjusted to each individual design.  Basic felting skills are required – participants should have experience in felting around a resist, and be able to lay out wool finely and evenly.

Sue began felting approximately 20 years ago and was immediately drawn to the potential for creating hollow forms using a resist.  Sue specialises in hats, tea cosies and bags with an emphasis on bright colours, and quirky designs, often incorporating nuno techniques, needlefelting and stitching to add surface design and texture.

Sue has created numerous hats, bags and tea pot cosies which have been exhibited and sold in galleries across Perth and in the UK.  She has taught felting for a number of years to both adults and children.
