Silk Paper with Nancy Ballesteros

Tuesday 5th March 10am - 1pm

This will be an informal and unstructured session based on the interest of the participants on the day. For making smallish samples, bring your normal felting kit as well as small carders or a dog brush if you have one. This is an opportunity to utilise your wool odds and ends, as minimal wool will be required. The techniques suit a variety of decorative fibres, so bring any viscose, other plant fibre or silk fibre you may have. Viscose packs will be available to purchase on the day.

SOLD OUT!!! Discovering Versatile Viscose with Sara Quail
Silk paper is an exciting new and unique medium for designing with silk fibres. A shimmering sheet of the silk paper is created by simply laying down unspun fibres and “gluing” them together with various adhesive mediums. Silk paper captures the intense lustre and beauty of silk fibres but it is not considered a true sheet of laid paper. Its surface texture can be manipulated in a variety of ways – scrunching, moulding, stitching etc. By experimenting with the various adhesives mediums you can learn to paint with the silk paper, use it in felting, create unique sculptural pieces or design wearable art.
On the day, you will be shown a variety of samples of different types of Silk paper and discussion on how they were made. We will then break off and create a sample of Silk paper that can be used in your own felting.

We hope you can join Nancy for an exploration into one of our favourite fibres –Silk!

Sold Out - Simple Stitches: Infinite Possibilities

Simple Stitches: Infinite Possibilities
Embroidery offers infinite possibilities. This workshop invites exploration of a simple range of stitches and their adaptability. In a small group, a facilitator will guide you through a simple, single stitch to create a small sample as a reference point. Then, changing length or direction of stitch, thread weight and/or color, proximity or repetition, you are on the way to creating any number of free-form variations. There are no boundaries.
The participants will repeat this process with a different stitch, either from the Straight Stitch family, Cross stitch, or Knots & Chains families. All the while creating different lines, marks, outlines, filling-in or to play with movement.
The effects of stitches vary with the background fabric, so you may wish to try your newfound techniques on your own felted textiles with the guidance and support in developing your own personal compilation.

Materials included in cost: Needles, fabrics, selection of threads

A selection of textile threads and fibres, stitch accessories, sample fabrics and pre-loved books will be available for purchase.

Participant Experience Level: Beginners to more experienced.

This workshop will be facilitated by Jennifer Walton. A teacher, Jenny has been a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild since 2003 and Group Leader of the Guild’s Innovative Stitches Group for several years.

The group, formed in the early 2000s to cater for a growing number of Guild members who wanted to extend their skills beyond traditional embroidery to design and contemporary textile techniques.

Monthly workshops give members skills in techniques needed including embroidery, felting, fabric collage, and fabric manipulation. The group also works together to encourage and help members develop their own artistic style and interests.

Recent exhibitions include ‘Signals, Cyphers and Stories: A stitched history of telecommunications’ at Wireless Hill Museum in 2021 and ‘Enshrined’ at the Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda October 2023.
The facilitators will be 3 experienced embroiderers, who have each exhibited work as individuals and contributed pieces to form group installations.
