Materials List

The following requirements are for creating a Nuno felted scarf using fine silk fabric, superfine Merino wool and Silk Hankies.

Material Requirements:
Fabric: Below are some suggested measurements for your scarf. Try on your favourite scarf and measure it, this will give you some idea of what length of scarf you like to wear. We will be working with about a 1.7 shrinkage rate (41%).

Please bring any of the following Silk Fabrics:
-Silk Georgette (commonly referred to Tissue Silk), Crinkle Silk Georgette or Silk Chiffon
-Open weave Silk fabrics like: Silk Mesh or Margilan Guaze – (but not the lightest weight one).

Please NO slippery fabrics like Paj, Habotai, or Pongee. My preference is 4.5 momme (mm) weight for scarves, but no lighter than 3.5mm and no heavier than 6 mm.

Short Scarf with a FINISHED LENGTH approx. 1 metre: Bring fabric 1.8 metres long x 38cm (6ft x 15in)
Average Scarf with a FINISHED LENGTH approx. 1.6 metre: Bring fabric 2.75 metres long x 38cm wide (9ft x 15in)
Long Scarf with a FINISHED LENGTH approx. 2 metre: Bring 3.4 metre long x 38cm wide
(11ft x 15in)

Hidden Loop: Add another 70cm (28in) to the length of your fabric if you would like to include a hidden loop at the bottom of your scarf.

Optional Fabric Pieces: A few pieces of light weight fabrics for additional decoration (silk or cottons preferred). It is more interesting if they are printed fabrics. Best if they are of a similar weight to your base fabric.
Silk Hankies: Approximately 50gms (1.8oz). If you have any scrappy bits of hankies in your stash these are fine to bring along as well. Each scarf will take approximately 25 – 50 gm (0.9 - 1.8oz) of hankies. I prefer working with the square Silk Hankies, but if you have any bell shaped Silk Caps bring them and we will do our best.
Optional: Extra hankies in case you need more or want different colours or want to make a second scarf.

Superfine Merino Wool tops: Approximately 50gms (1.8.oz), this is more than you will need, but having some extra is always good. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR WOOL IS 18.5 micron and ABSOLUTLY NO coarser than 19.5 micron! Bring a multi-colour wool top AND/OR colours that CONTRAST with the silk hanky colours. I always choose wool which is DARKER in colour to the Silk Hanky. One scarf usually takes around 25gms (0.9oz) of wool which measures 1 metre (3.2ft).
Optional: Extra wool in case you need more. Bring a few more colour choices to play with. I love using several colours in one scarf.
Felting Equipment
  • CLEAR (not blue) lightweight plastic sheeting (Painters Plastic drop sheets) that is 1 mil or 25 μm thick. Cut TWO sheets that are 3.6 metre long x 75cm wide (12ft x 30in)
  • Bubble Wrap – Bring a piece that is a ½ metre (20in) longer than the length of the scarf you choose to make and 75cm wide (30in). So that means bring bubble wrap for a Small Scarf 2.3m x 75cm, Medium Scarf 3.25m x 75cm, Large Scarf 3.9m x 75cm. (USA bring bubble wrap: Small Scarf 7.5ft x 30in, Medium Scarf 11ft x 30in, Large Scarf 12.5ft x 30in)
  • TWO pool noodles or pole. Make sure it is 75cm (30in) wide and around 5 cm(2in) in diameter (no broomsticks).
  • 2 or 3 Elastic ties for tying rolled up felt. No-roll waistband elastic (1” wide) or old hosiery are good because they stretch.
  • 3 or 4 old towels
  • Bar of olive oil soap
  • Sprinkler bottle or ball brauser. You can make your own using a 3 lt. (3qt) milk jug with FINE HOLES poked in lid with a hot needle. We need lots of water for this method. A spray bottle is too hard on your hands.
  • Netting to cover your work for wetting it out (optional, I usually don’t bother)
  • Bucket
  • Several micro cloths
  • Notebook, pencil
  • Name tag
  • Lunch
Fulling Equipment:
  • Wooden dowel rod or small diameter pvc pipe. Approximately 2-3cm (1 inch) diameter x .75cm long (30in). This will be used as a fulling tool.
  • BRING ANY ONE of these corrugated fulling surfaces: glass washboard, metal washboard, firm blue pool bubble wrap (like they cover spa’s to keep the heat in). I like clipping mine inside an oil drip tray (see photo), other corrugated surfaces can be the backside of Ikea cutting boards, or large size plastic paint tray that has lots of ridges – it also need to be not too flimsy…
  • Heavy rolling pin for fulling (optional) – you can use the dowel rod instead
  • Non-slip matt (optional) - useful for putting under these tools so they don’t slide.
