Toss n Tell – Shrinkage Rates
As felters we all know that felt shrinks as it fulls, but the age old discussion is how to measure that shrinkage. I often hear felters talking about shrinkage in percentage values ie “It shrank by 30%.” but this is an inaccurate and mathematically incorrect way of measuring shrinkage. Soosie Jobson will explain why, and how to calculate the most accurate method.
In addition to covering what is wrong with using percentages and how to calculate them, Soosie will venture into the exciting world of harnessing differential shrinkage to use it to shape and texturise your felt.
This is a Demo and Do Session
Bring your felting gear and stay to put this in practice. Things you can have a go at:
- Calculate shrinkage by making samples
- Make a small bowl using differential shrinkage
- Create a sample of texture using differential shrinkage
Materials list:
- Usual felting equipment
- Wool
- Resist material if you would like to have a go at a small differential shrinkage bowl
- Notebook and pen
