Faces in Felt with Chris Lines – UK
01/05/2020 @ 9:30 am – 03/05/2020 @ 4:30 pm
This workshop is for those who would love to learn to create felted portraits of their loved ones or favourite celebrities etc but who may lack confidence in their own artistic ability. Chris will help you to realize dramatic, detailed images of faces in felt made with fibres in a natural/monochrome colour and vibrant colourful palette, using your own images that will be prepared in advance by Chris*. You will be using a tonal separation technique that is specifically developed by Chris for felt makers using wet-felting techniques. Work will be made A3 size or larger, subject to image details.
Ultimately you could use this technique to create a uniquely personal set of images that could be joined together as a group portrait or framed as gifts for family and friends. Past students have gone on to exhibit their works and win awards using this technique. These techniques are of course applicable to use later for any subject matter of your choice.
As a part of the workshop Chris will teach you how to digitally manipulate your photographic images to produce a ‘master’ from which to work for further applications, if you wish to pursue this technique later on and are interested in learning these skills. This is entirely optional, and you don’t have to do this to participate in the workshop. There are a number of free online image manipulation applications available. Written notes for all steps will be provided.
by Chris Lines
- Day 1
Selection of fibres; making pre-felts according to a particular method suited to this technique; image preparation and starting to assemble the portrait (A3 or larger).
- Day 2
will continue to create and complete your individual image in felt and you will
get personalised advice and support throughout.
- Day 3
You will start to make a fully coloured Pop Art style felt portrait, again from your own image source, using the same technique but with coloured wool fibres. In 3 days, you will get this well underway but might not completely finish – just depends on how quickly you work and how complex your chosen image is. The colours will mainly be determined by the kind of image you submit and your personal preferences.
*Note: In order to allow participants to use their own images for this workshop, they will need to supply me with their photos by email in advance. You don’t have to bring a laptop or tablet to the workshop, only if you wish to practice. Pet/animal faces are also allowed as are other images (subject to advance agreement) and I will advise on the suitability of each image in advance.
A detailed Materials List will be sent out to all participants on booking.
Skill Level Required: Basic wet felting skills required.
